Started as a separate subject in the Under-Graduate curriculum in the Third BDS course in 1988-1989 by the Madras University.
From 1986-1995, the subject was handled by Dr. N.Gnanasundaram MDS and Dr.C.S..Prasad MDS as additional charge.
1995- The first Preventive and Community Dentistry Specialist Dr. M.B..Ashwath Narayanan is posted and given Charge of the department.
2007 Post-Graduate course started with 1 student.
The department is a full-fledged department catering to all the sections of the population and providing a complete range of preventive services.

The department regularly conducts Dental Health camps on request and as a part of Govt. Health programs. Eg. Varummun Kappom scheme. So far 50 camps have been conducted this year.
The department is equipped with a number of fully functional chairs (according to DCI norms) , Dental Van (for camps) , Computer with accessories, Television with DVD Projection, Slide projection and 400-450 charts and models for student and patient education. The department aims to take dental health to the needy sections and moffusil areas who do not have direct access to Dental treatment. The department also caters to about 24 NGO’s.
